Work Hours: The work schedule varies based on operational needs. Shifts may include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

THE DEPARTMENT
The University Police Department (UPD) is responsible for law enforcement, physical security, and emergency response at Cal Poly Pomona. The department is staffed by trained police officers, professional civilian staff and auxiliary personnel and is operational 24 hours-a-day, year-round. The peace officers of this department have statewide police authority and are vested with the same law enforcement powers and responsibilities as the municipal police or sheriff's departments in any California community. The department serves as "first responder" for a broad range of crisis issues on the campus including medical aid calls, injuries, and environmental emergencies. The department is responsible for response to all emergencies, crime reports and investigations on campus (except homicides and missing persons per the Kristin Smart Act). In addition, the department offers a wide range of programs and services designed to enhance the safety and security of the community and support the mission of the university. These responsibilities are carried out through a set of core values that reflect commitment to the highest standards of excellence and incorporate the community oriented policing philosophy. The University Police Department is part of the Administrative Affairs Division whose mission is to provide quality fiscal, human and facility services in support of the university community through partnerships and innovative solutions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
General Law Enforcement
Enforce local, county, and state laws.
Employee investigates criminal and non-criminal occurrences, makes arrests, interviews witnesses, transports prisoners, and testifies in court proceedings as required.
Patrols the campus and other property owned or operated by the University using various vehicular, foot, and stationary assignments.
Investigates traffic collisions, enforces traffic laws, provides safety escorts, responds to radio calls, accordingly, responds to emergencies as needed and performs other duties as assigned.

Community Interaction
Builds rapport between professional/civilian employees, students, volunteers, staff, faculty, and visitors by promoting public trust through ethical behavior and adherence to a set of core values as set forth by the Division of Administrative Affairs.
Seeks opportunities to foster partnerships and build diverse teams within the university community.
Supports the principles of community-oriented policing.

Report Writing
Writes reports to accurately describe events as they occur or as they are described to the employee. Includes drafting traffic collision sketches and crime scene diagrams as needed.
May be required to generate reports on a computer.

Communications
Participation in public speaking as requested by superior officer e.g. address housing residents, conduct public tours, safety talks.
Communicate with a multiethnic and diverse community.

Training
Participates in training which includes classroom instruction, and on-the-job training.
Employee must meet all training requirements established by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and Department policy.

Leadership
May be required to act as the Officer-in-Charge in the absence of the Sergeant or Corporal.
Employee will be expected to take supervisory charge of civilian employees during times of emergencies

QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent.
Possess a valid P.O.S.T. Certificate of Eligibility or a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in good standing
Eligible to be a peace officer in the State of California.
Valid California driver's license

Working knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures. Working knowledge of current criminal codes and laws. Effective interpersonal skills to resolve a wide variety of sensitive situations. Effective oral and written communication skills, including writing clear and comprehensive reports. Demonstrated ability to think and act effectively in emergency and sensitive situations.

CSU Classification Salary Range
This position is part of the SUPA bargaining unit, the CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the following site, https://www.calstate.edu/csu-system/careers/compensation/Pages/Classification-Standards.aspx. The CSU Salary Schedule is located on the following site:https://www.calstate.edu/csu-system/careers/compensation/Pages/salary-schedule-documents.aspx . The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is minimum $5,310 and maximum $9,017 per month. Please refer back to the anticipated hiring range for the appropriate salary rate for this particular position.
